Showcase: Completed showcase

After a large amount of great work from Neil the brochure has been finally completed.

My self and Neil did a small presentation on the processes which we have gone through to complete the brochure, this was talked through using our prints as a show and tell. Later I created a presentation on Prezzi an online presentation tool.

Through this presentation I will be narrating the various steps which I have taken to make the final product and showing JPEGs of the stages of development.

The map which can been see below includes a key and explains how the visitors can enter the showcase area.

The final brochure has been printed several times as the client wanted a number of hard copies for proof reading. The client has been emailed with the final PDF of the brochure which is the file format required by the printers.

As you can see a few small additions have been made. Two great sites have been set up to show both the event and the progression we have made in regards to our projects. The brochure and the map have been forwarded so that the pages can be updated. A Level Art Show

The second site: A level Show

This website has been made so that we can collaboratively share our progression with this project.

Created by Asher Scott and Heather Plimmer for the use of the Creative Digital Communications foundation degree

This has also been updated to show the progression through the map and the brochure design and the several stages of development

Showcase: Completed Map

After speaking with the client it was Ok to improvize and model a photography studio even though we were unsure which one was going to be used. This was the only thing from holding me back from not completing the map sooner. I have been in touch with the client up to the point and he likes everything we have done.

It became apparent that saving my images as JPEGS were not ass efficient as saving them as TIFFs as quality was lost when resized. For the final images they were saved as TIFFs in order to maintain high image quality.

Several adaptations of the map were created so any one form a variety could be chosen for the brochure.

I made a few renders which were more of a top down perspective, this way it was more apparent to the viewer they were looking at wall and floor space and design but we decided to go with a different design.

Showcase: Update

I contacted the client in regards to financial requirements for the project and it became apparent that as the only restrictions on cost were the fact the brochure was to be printed in house, the restrictions were only that of what the in house printer could do.

This said I went to the printer to discuss what their restrictions were. It was during this meeting I realised that we discussed paper folds and we realised that the fold we wanted could not be achieved. We looked at what 3 folds could be done and came across a good one. I also asked what was required to print the brochures and a PDF would suffice.

As we have inDesign available on campus we looked at continuing our design in that as it is one of the best design tools available to us.

After continuing our design in inDesign and following on with the house style we made a lot of revisions to the brochure design as well as layout due to the feedback from the meeting with the printer. With the design in inDesign e could now export our work as very professional  PDFs with bleed marks and other such printer refernce marks.

There are few minor touches which need to be made such as type sizes corrected and margins aligned, but all in all it has come on considerably.

You can see the vast amount of progress which has been made. The black boxes now has a transparency which I think is a great touch, all the text has been added from the tutors along with the images of student’s work which has been taken by class mates as they work on their personal projects.

The map has yet to be completed as I still am unsure of what studio is being used for photography. I contacted the client regarding this issue and it was advised it was best to improvise and create the studio, piking the best studio room. This is now being modelled and will be completed and shown in my next brochure update where it will be completed.

The above images seem a bit small, so here’s the full PDF.

I have emailed the client regarding all these revisions as we have almost completed the brochure, it is perhaps best to meet with him also. As he has been informed of all the things which have been done so far I hope he continues to like the brochure which has been created.

Showcase: Continuing the work

After keeping in touch with the client with what we had done I made a few more revisions to the map as I realised I had made an error.

I also tilted the view slightly allowing it to be more obvious of the perspective the viewer is looking at this way you can see the floor and you get a better sense of what you are looking at.

I have also yet to add the photography studio but this is due to the fact that the tutor as of yet which studio will be used so I will hold off modelling this until I know which room it is.

On line Identity: Final post

With all our work regarding the online identity completed we were to make a report which collates the blog posts we have made.

My Digital Identity

Through the period I have worked with the on line identity, it has become clear that at times I have tried to over explain things rather rather than simply writing what I want to achieve. This is especialy noticeable in some of my blog posts.

The PDF is a concise report of what I have learned in the digital identity class and over time I hope to make my grammar less verbose.

On line Identity: Content for my Social Media Platform

I have probably inadvertently answered this through a combination of things I have said in my previous posts.

To start off with I will be transferring my videos across from my Youtube account to my Vimeo account to add additional content. (Which is what I am in the process of doing now)

For another project I have created a video tutorial explaining how to make a time lapse with in VRay and Studio Max, I will add this to my Vimeo as it was this project which incentives me and inspired me to create my account in the first place.

This additional project has also given me the confidence to make additional tutorials so I will continue to upload these to my Vimeo along with any future video work I do for the the course and within Studio Max.

What seems great is that by uploading to Vimeo you get a much easier access to specific groups of people who also interested in the things you are so you can get good and relevant comments and criticisms from those who have similar interests.

hopefully with this kind of audience available I will recieve feedback on the work I am doing especially the tutorials I am making to help me become better, maybe it is even here I will be first noticed in the CG world for trying to help people by making these tutorials?

Final Project: Continuing here on in

After making this video ithas givven me the confidence to continue making CG tutorials this way. One tutorial I was asked to make was in regards to a very old project we had where I demonsrated a Studio Max Havok Reactor test showing a car crashing into boxes.

This is a tutorial I never got round to making admitedly because I was too nervious to make a tutorial.

I am in the middle of creating this one now to add to my growing collection of videos I have on Vimeo.

I am creating it in the same style as the one I have just created, making a PDF to accompany it, and recording it using screen capture with audio overlay.

I came across a great talk which took place at the GirlGeek Diner in Leeds last year, in regards to Using Video to Make an Impact. It is a very informative talk and is a interesting watch linked over on the Leeds Met Uni YouTube channel.

The speaker discribers perfectly the fears I had, and now I realise many people have, they just don’t realy talk about it. The biggest fear when making a video to publish online is you.

When you start putting things online it is your face, your voice and your ideas which are also online so you are oppening yourself to comment. This is one of scariest things when you think about it but if you don’t think about it then it isn’t so scary.

When mistakes happen and if your videos are not responded to positevly, or worste case not at all, you may be inclined to take them down or remove them for people not see but this way how can you learn, or allow others to see you learn form these mistakes if you hide them. If you do this you won’t be able to see the progression in what you have been working hard on doing.

Anyways the point I am making is that now I have become more comfortable making tutorials I may even advence them in some form, like ones I have seen whichh show the guy talking in a small window in the corner.

How ever these initial videos are responded too I will continue to make them and hope to make them better and more and more informative.

On line Identity: The Social Media Platform for my Digital Identity continued

For another end of year project we have been looking at creating video content.

I decided to make a tutorial on Studio Max using Vray on how to make an animation using the Sun & Sky options. With this made I needed a place to upload it and decided to go ahead and make a Vimeo account.

I think after a bit of contemplation the reason I was reluctant to create yet another media platform is that when you start putting things online it is your face, your voice and your ideas which online also so you are oppening yourself to comment.

I chose to set up an account on Vimeo for a number of reason. First and foremost I am really starting to dislike Youtube as a network of social media. It is now continuously being changed, and contains masses of adverts and immaturity among its users and is not aimed at the professional, where as Vimeo is.

Recently I realized that my Youtube account is contradictory as it contains my name as a professional yet holds nothing but educational based work. This itself is contradictory and is another reason to why I decided to create another video based media platform to showcase my work.

I set up my Vimeo account with the intention of it being purely to show my educational workings; this way I can get a more professional insight in regards to comments and feedback received. I am currently in the process of deleting the content off my Youtube and re-uploading it all on Vimeo.

Having created my Vimeo account I am amazed at how good it is. With Youtube so popular it is clear to see why it holds more content in areas I am interested in such as CG like demo reels or tutorials but I think over time people will use Vimeo as an addition media to showcase their work.

Vimeo allows users to easily search for ‘groups’ ‘categories’ and ‘channels’ which makes it simple for new users to search for things they are interested in and join communities of members who are all interested in the same thing. With in seconds I was able to see several CG and Studio Max sections which I joined and I get notifications when members have posted new video in the group.

It is a very clean and easy to use interface with simple colour co-ordinated menus such as these contacts and groups. the only thing I noticed was the number of videos you ave published and the amount of comments per video is the same blue, only a very minor gripe but it would have been nice to think up an extra colour.

You can simply ‘like’ any video you come across, and viewers can see what you have liked, what groups or channels you have subscribed too easily allowing people to quickly build up a profile of what your likes and interests are.

I am continuing to make tutorials in Studio Max and as I am enjoying using Vimeo so much now I will continue to use it more than my Youtube to post my videos.

Showcase: After meeting the client

Ok so first off all is on track and loads has been done, let me explain:

First off my personal work the map has come along great and I am now working in the group work with Neil to create a brochure design, here the map will be incorporated. Last Friday as scheduled I showed all the initial plans and concepts of the brochure design to the client which he loved every aspect of it.

The basic design if the layout can be seen above showing how it may be presented. You can see the black square will be replaced by images of the students’ work.

Continuing from this we looked at refining the design of the brochure with the aim to have a mock up ready for the following week. You can see the design progression and how it continues with the house style which originated from the poster design and has carried through into the ticket design from what I understand.

This design of the brochure has been only marginally difficult as we required quotes from the tutors involved with the showcase in addition to the one the client has provided. These we do not have yet but have improvised and filled the gaps with Lorem Ipsum generated text for the time being.

The design is a 3 fold brochure with the colour coded map on the back. Over leaf each subject has coresponding text boxes with information on the subject, the idea is that there is some sort of colour connection between these boxes and the map such as a diffuse glow on the boxes.

PP/CE Work update

My initial plans 12 weeks ago when receiving the brief were to create an advantageous multiple page B5 book.

This was to be printed and bound, showcasing the highest quality of my renders within Studio Max as images correlating to the text.

This project was to be done within InDesign and was to be a piece of work I could be proud of and use as a great portfolio piece of work as well as proudly being able to showcase it as my first ever printed piece of work.

Since then however my plans have changed.

With the introduction of the time brief I was not expecting along with my recent realizeations in regards to the A-Level showcased project I have have had to rescale my ideas to something which can be done in a smaller time scale.

One thing I realised early on was how I am constantly using the web as a source of reference so I set out to source a variety of forms of media such as books and magazines to aid my research. I took out some great books from the learning resource centre such as Art Deco Architecture Design, Decoration and Detail from the Twenties and Thirties by Patricia Bayer which are helping with the research greatly.

With my research nearly completed and the fact I know I still want to do some form of print based product I set about brainstorming ideas to what I could do. In class a few options came up such as making a record cover with inserts and such or and old Art Deco style magazine which are printed really big.

Work is coming along great and in 4 weeks my rescaled plan will be completed. I certainly have not abandoned creating my book, I will continue to develop it over the summer break and I will hopefully have it completed and printed shortly after I arrive back onto the second year. I know it will have been completed after the deadline but it wont matter. What matters is that I set out to create an amazing piece of work and it will have been created to the standard I had initially planned so it can be used as a great portfolio piece.
